Feeling ALL the Feels: Navigating Beyond Toxic Positivity in the Workplace

I want to talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough exposure, yet is essential for our mental wellbeing, and that’s feeling ALL the feelings. 

Every time I see that ‘Positive vibes only’ slogan, I do NOT feel positive vibes about it! 

How about if we were to rewrite that as ‘All vibes welcome’?!

As working professionals, we’re often encouraged to embrace optimism and maintain a positive outlook. But it’s essential to remember that it’s okay not to be okay all the time. 

Life can be challenging, and it’s natural to experience a range of emotions – both positive and negative.

I’m eager to put the spotlight on this topic and build an understanding of how to avoid falling prey to toxic positivity. After all, genuine emotional awareness and empathy are essential for creating a supportive and authentic work environment.

Embrace the full spectrum of emotions

As high-achievers, we often feel pressure to maintain an unwavering positive attitude. However, it’s essential to recognize that negative emotions are an integral part of the human experience.

I wish I had learned years ago to simply allow myself to feel anger, frustration, sadness, and disappointment – that they are valid emotions too.

Embracing the full spectrum of feelings helps us build resilience and authenticity.

Avoid denying painful feelings

Optimism isn’t about denying the existence of painful emotions.

Instead, it’s about acknowledging these feelings and finding healthy ways to cope with them.

Pretending everything is fine when it’s not can lead to repressed emotions and added stress.

Instead, create a safe space to express your emotions, either with a trusted friend, in your journal, or by seeking professional support if needed.

Make room for self-compassion

We often show compassion to others, but we forget to extend the same kindness to ourselves.

When you’re going through a tough time, practice self-compassion. Treat yourself as you would a friend in need – with understanding and empathy.

Remember, it’s okay to take breaks, seek support, and prioritize self-care.

Seek support and connect

Feeling all the feels is a shared experience. Reach out to colleagues or mentors you trust and share your struggles or victories.

Connecting with others who understand your journey can be incredibly comforting and validating.

Remember, you are not alone on this roller coaster ride of emotions.

Set boundaries with toxic positivity

Toxic positivity is the belief that one should maintain a positive mindset and reject anything negative.

While it might be well-intentioned, it can be dismissive and invalidating of genuine emotions.

Set boundaries when faced with toxic positivity, and don’t hesitate to express your authentic feelings.

Embrace open and honest conversations about emotions, both at work and in your personal life.

Cultivate emotional intelligence

Developing emotional intelligence allows us to understand and manage our feelings effectively.

Pay attention to your emotions and the triggers that impact your mood. By increasing your emotional awareness, you can respond constructively to challenging situations, fostering a healthier work environment.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, can help you stay grounded in the present moment.

Mindfulness allows you to observe your emotions without judgment, enabling you to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

Try breathing in deeply for a count of six and out for a count of eight – making your exhale longer than your inhale is a great way to bring your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) back online.

In short, remember that it’s normal to feel all the feelings, even in the professional sphere.

It’s healthy to embrace your emotions, acknowledge their presence, and offer yourself and others genuine understanding and support.

Recognise that optimism is not about denying difficult emotions but rather facing them with courage and compassion.

I believe that a work culture that values emotional authenticity and fosters growth by embracing all the feels is the most productive one.
